BRASILIDADE PÓS-MODERNISMO

Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil  – Rio de Janeiro – anticipates the celebrations of the centenary of the 1922 Modern Art Week with an unprecedented exhibition.

Curated by Tereza de Arruda, the exhibition “Brasilidade Pós-Modernismo” sheds light on the achievements and milestones that 1922 Modern Art Week brought to the Brazilian visual arts, and brings together unpublished and emblematic works by 51 Brazilian artists.

Brasilidade Post-Modernismo celebrates the centenary of the 1922 Modern Art Week through traces, remnants and achievements acquired in the plastic arts. This long process of assimilation, awareness, interaction and exploration was necessary to reach the essence of Brazilian contemporary art presented in this exhibition with artists from different generations, geographical origins and ethnicities. The exhibition has the participation of 51 artists and is not designed with a historical perspective, but rather focused on the present, with works produced from the 1960s until today.

The nucleus entitled “Futuro”, focusing on Brasília as an example of futuristic utopia, features works by Lina Bo Bardi, as well as drawings and sketches by other architects, such as Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, work by artist Márcia Xavier, and records captured by photographer Joaquim Paiva and filmmaker Jorge Bodanzky. The Brazilian modernist avant-garde group sought the new, the innovative, the unknown, constructive and non-destructive. And an example of a future builder is Brasília, the capital conceived with a utopian idea and considered one of the greatest successes of Modernism in Brazil. “Its conception, idealization and realization are one of the greatest proofs of the realization of a futuristic idea”, comments Tereza de Arruda.
