Intervalo das Coisas

Focusing on contemporary art interventions, the Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro hosted the project by José Bechara, renowned for his production of paintings from the oxidation of metals on already used truck tarpaulins and for installations with the “home” theme.

The artist from Rio de Janeiro produced five site specific works that occupied, in particular, the garden and also the living room of the house, seeking to establish a poetic relationship between the internal and external spaces of the residence designed by Lina Bo Bardi.

With the glass planes, José Bechara explored the materiality of this support using transparencies, natural and artificial reflected light, creating spatial illusions of real architecture, such as the works in “Com licença, Dona Lina” and “Pintura Elétrica”, situated between sculpture and painting.

Another prominent element in the artist’s production is the patina of time, the result of the oxidation of metals, also used in works in glass. This contradicts an excerpt from the opening text of the exhibition, by Luiz Camillo Osório, which says: “unlike truck tarpaulins, glass does not have time, its surface does not allow it to stick to historical density”. The work installed in the garden, consisting of cups, glasses and transparent and colorful glass containers, in extensive contact with the surrounding nature, accumulated dry leaves and earth particles in its interiors, demonstrating the passage of time.
