July 16, 2016 – January 8, 2017
The New Perspectives on Art of the Americas exhibition was the second edition of the biennial organized in Santa Fe, dedicated to contemporary art in the Americas. Under the title “Much wider than a line”, this edition proposed an approach to the connections between countries on the continent that share common histories and traditions.
The exhibition focused on the interrelation of American countries whose histories and cultures have elements and moments in common. The team of five curators – Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, Kathleen Ash-Milby, Pip Day, Pablo León de la Barra and Kiki Mazzucchelli – selected 35 artists from 16 countries, as well as commissioning 11 new works to deal with related themes to colonial legacies, vernacular expressions, influence of indigenous cultures and our relationship with the land.
Lina Bo Bardi’s production was approached in the political sense that her work encompasses. As a result of two immersive experiences in northeastern Brazil, the architect becomes an important defender of popular culture, expressive of the vernacular and of a close relationship with the land, as a manifestation to be valued and incorporated into the established cultural circuit. She appropriates elements of this culture in her own production and, from them, builds decolonized spaces.
